To create more usable space in a loft conversion, dormers
can be constructed. There are a number of different types
of dormers to choose from, the most common are either
pitched roof or flat roof dormers. Pitched roof dormers
tend to look better from the outside, as normally they
will be in keeping with the existing roof pitch, whereas
flat roof dormers offer more usable space inside the conversion.
Dormers can have a variety
of finishes to match the rest of the property where possible.
Finishes range from cement based renders to hanging tiles,
lead covering to wood or plastic cladding, and in most
cases will be maintenance-free.
If planning permission is required for a loft conversion,
it may sometimes be difficult to gain approval for a flat
roof dormer, although not in all cases.
